The music is such an integral part of Outer Wilds, I honestly can't fathom the development process. I'm guessing Andrew and the team just use the Vision Staff on each other so they can figure shit out synced up.

The track sounds stuck in a loop, repeating certain melodic fragments like a broken recording, and with a gentle fuzziness overlaying the synths which sweep in. Perfect representation of broken memories. It's happy, but unable to move on. Just... nostalgia.

Sometimes the vinyl can't play anymore.

has to be my favorite of the slide reel songs, if only because of that ending. the strange sound and the bells chiming out one of the motifs really sells these slightly scary creatures dreaming a happy, peaceful dream.

I came to a sudden realization while re-listening to this OST. Owlks are often seen as "ghosts in the machine", stuck forever in a computer with no way out beside death. But aren't you the same? Though it may look like ATP saves you from death, The Hatchling is not time traveling, The Hatchling always dies. It's the memories that are sent to the new timeline, to a new/same body. Looped beyond the end of time, stuck within the solar system you have been exploring for ages. YOU are the ghost in the machine. YOU are the Prisoner of Nomai technology. The only way out of the machine is turning it off, and blowing out your flame.

God, I just keep coming back to this one.

I adore how melancholy the 'theme' of the Strangers is. Depending on how it's played (and with what instrument/context), it can be anything from a waltz with the theremin to a lullaby with the glockenspiel/music box- both of which are strikingly appropriate. But regardless of how it's performed, there's anyway this undertone of lamentfulness that encapsulates the entire story of their species so well.

The strangers never instilled fear in me, only pity. Those poor souls, trapped in a prison of their own making..
what’s worse, I noticed that there are no children. They deliberately chose to end themselves, just as they’ve destroyed most of the physical evidence of their existence..

It always sounds like the Nomai distress beacon is in the background of this song... idk if that was intentional, but it feels thematically appropriate/a cool way of showing how the strangers were hiding away in this false dreamworld while the Nomai underwent such immense tradgedy. Like how real world sounds are faint and muffled from inside the dream, the beacons would have been too faint and muddled to hear from the dream if they had even been able to wake up to respond.
How differently things could have gone if the Strangers were awake to hear their call for help, I wonder

Everyone has been watching the reels of home. We have viewing centers where you can gather to watch them, and they've been full every night.

The commander wants to create an artificial world - one where we can avoid the signal and our death. He wants to model it off of our home planet, even wants to make the sky look like we're there. I don't know how he's going to do it. He's getting some of our smartest individuals to work on it.

The eye makes me so curious, but whenever I fall asleep, all I can dream of is being back home. I miss sitting outside and watching the kids run up and down the streets. I miss drinking something cold and staring up at the sky, with the sun and all of the stars above me. I used to want to explore it all, and now look at me. I'm in a real, working, functional ship with all of my brothers and sisters.

I think I will continue to live in this dream for a while. I don't want to face the reality of the truth right now.

I can't stop listening to this, I swear I will come back years from now and hear this song. I will literally bawl my eyes out because I wish I could play this game again, the DLC and the game itself. This will some day more than likely remind me of what it use to be like in my childhood. Thank you Mobius for making such an outstanding game. The college project went beyond amazing :)

when i hear that little bit at the end it always leaves me feeling like sad and melancholy. these poor things couldn't bear reality anymore and went to sleep forever. and they dream of home. the image of them falling asleep as that tune plays makes me so sad. i really like this song

Stuck in a broken loop, repeating a fuzzy half-reality aboard the stranger, their tomb. Triumphant though, the synths rise crystal clear - a new unnatural world that allows the loop to flourish once more, for them to continue to expand on the melody. They can go home again, if only in dreams. Haunting sounds overlay and it fades out, then breaks entirely, only a lullaby remaining - their final slumber. This was how the inhabitants spent their final days. Perhaps some or many of them were happy... but one was not...

A dream of home is a crazy ost name, because, obviously, they miss their home😕

to me, the ending sounds like the cries/howls they make when expressing some sort of emotion but with a bit of digitized distortion, as if they found happiness in this digital world they created for themselves, which really hits me in the feels...

Hearing that last little sad melody for the first time made my heart ache.😢💔

This is the only song on the soundtrack that I would call amy semblance of "happy", and given when it's representing that just makes it even sadder ::(

1:37 you can hear the faint rendition of the elegy for the rings leitmotif, and it sounds like a soft lullaby. Makes me cry every time I listen to this track.
