Sutter Buttes UFO Solved & Balloon Identified

This was pretty obviously a balloon. But people were confused by the weird shape and the dark regions. Making it brighter and stabilizing it made it a lot clearer and eventually let us track down what the balloon was. Crowdsourcing works again!

And no, it's not the most serious UFO case. But it was a fun little puzzle and a great showcase of how crowdsourcing is often the best way of figuring out little mysteries like this.

I spent 2000+ hours flying at "balloon altitudes" above Los Angeles. I probably saw a loose balloon every day. Sometimes I'd use them as an airborne reference point and have my student fly in circles around them. I recognize them instantly in supposed UFO videos and it drives me crazy that others don't!

Prior to becoming more skeptical i used too see Mick West as a angry scrooge trying to kill all the fun. Well done. This is good science. Study the image objectively, investigate the evidence then find the correct conclusion. This means that anamolies that can be dismissed as accidental identification of ufo's can reduce the genuine ufo sightings to a more credible outcome.
