Well my grandmother used to say that we are not betrayed by our enemies because we can see them coming from a mile away. True betrayal comes from people we recognize, love and trust. And this man probably made the choice between his family and someone else’s. People are always going to save their own asses first.

Anyone who thinks that this couldn't happen in these United States is part and parcel of the reason why it COULD happen here!

This is so sad. I can’t believe this happened 77 years ago, and I wonder if Vandenburg saved his family.
I went on a Holocaust learning spree about 6 months ago, and I just got obsessed with it. Re-learning about it as an adult is tragic. It’s still shocking that the World came to what it did in WW2. And WW1 for that matter. I seriously stopped being able to stomach some of the books and documentaries I was learning from- some of the stories were seriously too sickening.

Her story is a powerful lesson on the evils of hatred, militarism and complicity. But its also a powerful lesson on the beauty of the human spirit and the drive for survival and happiness. I'm thankful for her story. The worst tragedy would be to not learn from it.

When there are family members, namely your own children, relying on you for their safety, and evil men standing ready to strip them from you and murder them unless you co-operate with them and hand over and help to murder other families, well... a person can become an ultimate monster in the eyes of many others. Even decades later.

When I visited the Anne Frank museum, I was told it was a single gestapo officer who visited the house and discovered the opening behind the bookcase. He then arrested all the Jews hiding in the apartment and then they had to wait one hour before others arrived to take them away. This seems strange if they suspected jews hiding there.

People snitch to get out of parking tickets these days. Judging a man in that situation is unimaginable.

I recommend reading about Chaim Rumkowski, the leader of the "Judenrat" in the Lodz ghetto, who sold out his people to the Nazis (and was eventually killed by them, at the end). It's not a problem unique to the Holocaust, lots of groups throughout history have had opportunists who become Quislings.

I had read that the Frank family was outed inadvertently by a German official who knew the family, but this makes a lot of sense. Human nature and survival of the fittest mentality applies here. What is also fascinating is the assertion that some folks trusted the election process and that with the election of the chancellor some things would change. It’s pretty much what we see happening in the US…once these folks come to power then they begin to unleash the unimaginable. This is why history is important

I mean you give me the choice between my family dying and someone else’s Ima save my family everytime. It’s messed up but that’s reality.

Had I been in Vandenberg’s situation would I have done any differently?

The daily grind of fear and suspicion . . .

None of us is to have any illusions of one’s own righteousness.

As a child I always thought "The Diary of Anne Frank" was a very sad story!.. Very sad

The sad thing is, his betrayal probably did very little to save his own family in the end.

Investigators admitted they are only sure for 85% Make sure you wouldn't betray her yourself and don't accuse people unless you're sure .

Her description of how events came about. They are sorta being mirrored in current times in America now. Make me question our future.
