"Manufacturing is one of those areas where employers are constantly having trouble filling vacancies."

America is "nostalgic" for the manufacturing industries, but it is not clear if people will go back and work in them, says The Wall Street Journals Joseph Sternberg.

„Nostalgia about manufacturing is a nice feeling, as long as I don’t have to work in manufacturing.“

Those nostalgic for the 1950's and 60's American industrial might, tend to forget that our economic competitors were trying to clear smoldering rubble from their streets. We were the only industrial nation that remained intact at the end of WW II. This was as much luck as it was sacrifice by our soldiers and our allies. The "American Dream" is different from other people's dreams in other nations, how? There is nothing inherently American about wanting to thrive economically, live in safe communities, educate your children, own a home, save for retirement, have a safety net, health care and the like.

The tariff plan will evidently lead to high inflation, the high inflation is a significant reason why most retirees have sleepless nights. The increase in prices of everyday items puts them at risk of running out of money. As prices rise, the amount of money retirees can withdraw from their retirement savings also increases

There is nostalgia in America for the 50’s 60’s and 70’s because in the post-war period the US was literally the only industrialized economy left standing, so it was a very good time for the middle class. The fact that the US was a manufacturing economy during that time confuses correlation with causation. The cause of that good time was because there was no competition left anywhere in the world.

Heres why. You dont try to bring back the stone age in the iron age. You dont try and bring back the industrial age in the technical age.

It takes decades to build up factories and supply chain. This is something that cannot happen overnight. Further, Trump can change his mind tomorrow. SMH

Most Americans don’t know what day it is, let alone understand economic policy.

That nostalgia should also include the 'good paying union jobs' that were killed in the late 70's and early 80's.

The american dream is what we in Europe would call slavery, work 3 jobs to make a living not a dream in our mind .

When the tariffs hitting Canada and Canada fired back Sec Lutnick pleaded with Ontario's Premier to hold off. He said that if Trump is kept happy everything would be OK. Canada sent a negotiating team to DC after the election to talk to Trump's team. No one would speak to them. They stayed in DC talking to everyone. Trump's team was AWOL.

Sadly, American voters are unfamiliar with manufacturing ecosystem and voted in a stupor in Nov. 2024.

Precious few manufacturing jobs will be returned. It is nonsensical to think that US workers can 'replace' manufacturing workers in places like Indonesia or Vietnam when the price differential between a US worker and a comparable worker in Southeast Asia is x10 or x20. And the jobs relatively few that are returned to the US will by and large be at the very top end of the industry and will be for University-trained industrial engineers and robot engineers and not blue collar workers on a production line.
