Hmm, this is the only time I heard of Little Hanoi. Vietnam diasporas tend to associate themselves with former South Vietnam (Little Saigon) instead of North Vietnam (Little Hanoi). Little Hanoi won't fly here in the USA.

Very informative and heart-rending program. Thank you.

The title is misleading, as the doc has little to do with "little Hanoi in Berlin", and the dubbing is not always accurate or even correct as usual.

"They were put on a ship to Germany, which is not somewhere they wanted to go, but that is how it turned out. The most important thing is to survive" - the difference between a refugee and the current economic migrants.

Historical background for this was that US and West Germany got South Vietnamese refugees on the other hand the former German Democratic Republic was allied North Vietnam Ho chi Minh's regime therefore you might have Half East German and Half North Vietnamese origin people.

I don't blame that boys parents for hating the north vietnamese. Just like the hmong, most fought for the Americans but some fought for the communist. 40 years later, the people that sided with the communist see that our lives are better than theirs and now they'll do anything to get to america

Berlin is a safe city overall compared to most big cities in the world. In comparison to other countries, the crime rate is quite low. But unfortunately the far-right there is very aggressive and dangerous! If you are not white, you always have to take care because something can happen at any time.
Receiving random Insults or having people say that they hate you right to your face, being pushed in the metro because of your skin color or having things thrown at you are actually quite common. Very sad reality that people don't usually like to talk about! :-(

They say Germany is beautiful and it is. But the look of the place makes me edgy.
