You wouldn’t control them, but just hitch a ride for a few seconds before popping back into existence nearby at max speed or a standstill based on if you are holding the accelerator or brake

If we had different colored item boxes that had different sets of items available so during a race we could have different paths that lead to different items, allowing leading players have access to more interesting item choices

Storymode: The story mode starts with just Mario, but with every track a new character is unlocked. The villain is first just Bowser again, having taken everyone hostage to force Mario to race him, but then he is upstaged by - Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach! (Yes, that's how I would justify their existence. They are villains. Evil metal copies of Mario and Peach.) It becomes a time travel plot that ends with you having to beat the metal characters on a twisting liquid metal track in a dark future.

Suggesting the Koopalings be skins so that they "don't take up any extra roster spots" is fine, only if you mean you want the CSS to be cleaner. If the idea is that making the Koopalings into skins would allow for characters to take their spots, then that's not how that works. Mario Kart isn't Smash, the amount of effort needed to make a brand new character in one is not the same as the other, there is decidedly less work since all that needs to be worried about in Mario Kart is the model, the voices, unique stats and maybe some other minor variables. There's a reason why the skins that do exist are very minor pallet swaps and nothing major. The only exception here is Link, which is BotW costume was added much later.

Of course, nothing is stopping them from making more characters on top of all 7 Koopalings, but the main point is that combining the Koopalings into one slot isn't going to free up character space.

I don't think Koopalings wouldn't well as skins in Mario Kart because of their animations, stats and weight class.

For kart customization if they keep the system introduced in 7 and 8/8DX they should add a preset system so that any custom kart you make can easily be picked using presets

As long as they start out with 96 tracks and have smart steering, I will be happy. Bring back the giant mushroom and it will be perfect.

I think they should take inspiration from the Mario Kart Arcade GP series in terms of items. There’s a ton to choose from, so you can build a strategy by having to choose which items to use.
