London - Dirty Money Capital

When one thinks of money laundering and anonymous bank accounts places like the Cayman Islands or Switzerland might come to mind. Those places, it turns out, are just the door through which dirty money walks. Its final destination since the fall of the Soviet Union has been one of the five financial capitals of the world, London. Starting all the way back with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and banking deregulation to Boris Johnson actively courting oligarchs and kleptocrats who have benefited from the scramble to salvage and grab any wealth they could from the collapse of the Soviet Union. This hasn’t been a clever use of unintended loopholes but rather an active campaign of courting Russian and Chinese money. Through the use of so-called ‘Golden Visas’ wealthy investors were able to claim residency in London and through a series of bank transactions utilizing the United Kingdom’s off shore holdings money comes into London dirty and emerges clean as well as giving the beneficiaries, often anonymous due to lax regulation enforcement, their own sense of legitimacy including seats in the House of Lords and lifetime Baronships. After the war in Ukraine there’s been more focus on London’s role in laundering Russian money and what can be done to end its status as the Dirty Money capital of the world.
