If anyone needs an explanation, Sanemi is trying to protect Genya by acting like he doesn’t know him and keeping him away from the corps on free will. On the other hand, Kanae had Shinobu enter the demon slayer corps with her, and when she died, she told her the appearance of Doma. Shinobu is now stuck with awareness, guilt, and the horrible feeling of revenge. Kanae unknowingly made Shinobu’s subconscious to hide all negative emotions.

edit : I understand where some are coming from by saying Kanae told shinobu to quit the corps when she died, but it doesn’t change the fact that she described Douma’s appearance to Shinobu, and ofc she will take revenge so well it doesn’t looks like she really wanted her to quit… but that’s only my opinion, please respect the opinion of anyone in the comment… some are getting really angry remember THIS is only anime character :]

I think the editor thought that Kanae is the reason why Shinobu has to keep a fake smile because she said that she loved Shinobu's smile. BUT, she only wanted her to smile more and not become a whole other person🥀

I belive that both sanemi and kanae are really good older bro and sis, cuz sanemi just wanted wanted whats best for genya to live a happy life, and not to suffer from the death of his siblings and mother, and kanae wanted for shinobu to live a normal life as well and to have a smile on her face, but of course genya or shinobu didnt listen to their older bro and sis, and went on being demon slayers, to avenge their family..
