"The Story Behind the Song" (published February 24, 2021 by Heather Schopf):

There are actually two stories here...
One involves the song's origination and one involves its aftermath.

Being married to a pastor, I've seen life from that perspective for the past 17.5 years. My husband is very guarded in what he shares with me that involves things our church people have shared with him privately (the older I get, the more I'm thankful for this protection!). That said, I do still inevitably get wind of various struggles that perhaps don't make it on the public prayer request list. These are burdens for sure, and even heavier when they involve sin patterns that have started out small but have grown to produce crippling life consequences.

One of these specific circumstances aroused holy anger within me, which led me to write the lyrics to "Shine Your Light". Oh, that we all would do more soul introspection, seeking God's help to uproot sin that grows in the fertile soil of our deceitful hearts!!

Fast forward to 2017 when we incorporated this brand new song into our tour repertoire. I loved singing this sincere, richly harmonic, a cappella song on a number of tours. I can't help but wonder if the next few years were God's gracious "yes" answer to this prayer that I sang over and over again. So very much "came to light" for me and if I'm honest, the "great revealing" continues. I am becoming painfully aware of how my heart runs hard after "life expectations" and "ambitions" and gives so much less effort toward finding Christ to be "all in all". We are far more sinful than any of us could imagine. Far less thankful. Far less surrendered. Thankfully, "where sin ABOUNDED, grace ABOUNDED much more" (emphasis mine), Romans 5:20. Have you prayed a prayer like this recently?...

Here I come before You, more sinful than I know.
And though I've come confessing, there's more You could expose.
For deep is the deception, dark this heart of mine.
Oh, take this invitation: come search again inside.

Shine Your light, don't let sin stay hidden any longer.
Shine Your light, keep strongholds from getting any stronger.
Shine Your light, shine it full and bright
So I can see what needs confessing,
What is holding back Your blessing.
Father, full of grace, this is what I pray:
Come and shine, shine Your light today!

Pierce my inner darkness with Holy Words divine,
With Words that lift the cover off motives deep inside.
And gently take what's hidden, bring it to the light.
Oh, Father, help this child see with Your holy sight!

Heather, I revisited this wonderful video this afternoon after 5 years!. Once again, the tenor part came through and the alto was so rich. I am reminded of my dear wife singing alto in the choir. Your hymn writing shines in this (no pun intended) A Capella piece. The ministry I serve often leads to some dark places and your musical message is a help.

Another song you wrote, " This is the Will of God" and "Bread of Life" allowed me to be content at where God has me right now.

What a searching thought in music and song. It takes such courage to desire what you are singing about. But oh how we need the Holy Spirit, the author of God's Word, to search us on a daily basis. Once a gain a great song. Thank you for your ministry in music.

Heather, what a haunting and penetrating performance. Justus Schofield gave great balance to the harmony. You and Christa carried this difficult to perform from beginning to the end. The video was excellent and the candles were a nice touch. Wonderful video from start to finish. Bravo to Foreverbesure!
