When you look at the half rest symbol, it looks like a hat. The word "hat" starts with the letter "h". The word "half" also starts with the letter "h". So, if you see the hat, it's half rest. That's how I memorized it.

So when I'm riding my lyrics in between the time after the chorus to the next verse I have always labeled as a rest, so that is incorrect? I intended for it to be a time that only the instrumentals played like there was no vocals it was just instrumentals.
