How to Shoot on Location WITHOUT Electricity

Oftentimes, filmmakers will find unique locations that look perfect for the story, but are nightmares for production. Sometimes, there aren't enough bathrooms. Other times, there's no available parking. On this shoot, we don't even electricity.

So how do even begin to start lighting? Most productions would think about generators first, which is the industry-standard solution in most cases, but they pose a series of problems. They require refills on gasoline everyday that you're running them, they are bad for the environment, and they are LOUD. However, if you have LED light sources like ours, you can use rechargeable v-mount batteries and a compact mobile battery like the Aputure Delta Pro, powered by EcoFlow, which are more lightweight, efficient solutions for locations such as these.

In this video, we'll show you how many lights can run off of this single power source, so you can correctly gauge how many lights and batteries to bring on your next production.

The guy on the left looked ‘over lit’ to me his angle didn’t seem to ‘match’ the other actor. Having said that I still appreciate your info sharing

This is the best look you guys have done to date. Great job on this one

Very impressing. Love the shots, especially the back-light from the 1200D. It is not "without" electricity when you have expensive generators, but I understand what you meant. I was hoping for a tutorial on how to use only natural light on interior locations, maybe you could do that in the future too? Also, the haze makes it look amazing 🙂

great video from Aputure.. One thing I noticed that in the wide shpt, the left guys face was bit dark, in close up it felt little extra lit (which I understand light moves the camera), But could it be more contrasty? Just a thought.

LOVING these Brady "crossovers". Looking great! There is one thing though, those unlit lanterns 😅

I literally had the same situation at the weekend lighting a derelict building with no working electricity, I only had Aputure V-lock power stations and Amaran 150c, 300c, P60c and 8 mc 100's and 8 B7c's got the job done nicely. Something like an Eco Flow in a situation that needed more power would be cool though.

Does anyone else feel like the audio was a bit overly clean in a weird way? Something was giving uncanny valley to my ears.

Brady is the bomb when it comes to lighting. I've learned so much from that guy, my fav. youtuber right now. Props for recognizing talent and bringing him in!

What is the audio workflow? That is some clean dialogue.

Did you guys do ADR for that video? The amount of bass in their voice was sooo much. Not necessarily bad, but their sound sounded too good, perhaps distractingly so.

How to explain to the client (who is a noobie and stubborn) about the location that "we have to remove a few things like the closest, etc, for a good shoot, and this is the right location/seen for the short. Thank you 😊

I really liked the lighting on this. It sold the scene real well. However, the audio was off-putting. The men sounded like they were speaking directly into microphones and did not sound like they were in the room. It sounded a lot like ADR. It took me out of the scene. Visually though, it worked for me. The LS 1200 is an incredible light....I just don't like the thought of selling my first born to be able to afford one.

Sorry Guys!
For me the "without electricity" means we have no power in the house... and the neighborhood also.
And what see on the video... you bring a power generator and hundreds off watts... block the windows with negative fills...
instead of holds a pair of diffusion clothes or reflection boards in the right place and angles.
With that power, you could have recorded this scene in a furnished studio..

This looks amazing but boi the sound is bad, you strip away everything from the scene that makes conversation natural (like sipping, breathing and all) it feels like they are in a podcast room 😂😂

Whata misleading title... you did have electricity, and more lights than a low budget film could have too. It might have not been socket electricity but you "generated" way too much electricity to power all that gear...
