Well, professional spectrometers are much bigger for a reason, they are much more precise, and tell you the composition of any material in real time, this however can only COMPARE the rough data it scans to the existing database online, so in theory, you can scan 100 types of apple and it will always show the same composition. Not very precise, it cannot tell you if the said apple has more or less sugar, amount of water etc.. This is just my amateur opinion backed up by a real phd. physical-chemist, and i would LOVE if somebody would prove us wrong.

Awesome! I've been looking for a affordable spectrometer for years. My idea was to use it to identify plants and insects with a smart-phone.
I  know that the military uses a similar IR-based technology to identify  DNA from satellites.

Calling this thing spectrometer is too generic! Is it IR or UV/Vis? Also it claims quantitative analysis not only qualitative, which is impossible without a reference qualitative curve. The other drawback that there is no database that large and they ask you to help them create it. When u scan especially a fruit or a beverage like they show, we are talking about lots of different substances, that cannot be identified alltogether with a scan, because there are peaks in each others spectra that overlap each other according to their concentration. Not convinced!
