The 2022 Soccer World Cup in Qatar is hugely controversial. The allegations range from corruption in the awarding of the tournament to Qatar to harsh criticism of the host nation for its human rights record, and its World Cup carbon emissions.

Even as the World Cup gets underway, there’s been no letup in the criticism. The decision to hold the prestigious sports event in the middle of the desert, in the small Gulf state of Qatar, has been controversial from the start. FIFA officials are accused of accepting bribes to award hosting rights to Qatar. Qatar itself, meanwhile, is accused of exploiting hundreds of thousands of migrant workers to build its World Cup stadiums. Then there are the huge carbon emissions. The tournament was moved to winter to avoid Qatar’s summer temperatures of 50+ degrees Celsius. But even in November, the stadiums need significant air conditioning.

Journalist Christa Hofmann shows how the conservative Muslim emirate is looking to establish itself on the global stage with mega sports events like the World Cup. She visited the newly built stadiums and spoke with migrant workers - as well as Qatari officials, World Cup fan representatives, and Qatar and Middle East analysts.

I see how Węstern countries sanction countries such as cuba, russia, iran, venezuela, belårus, myanmar because of the lack of freedom of speec and lgbtq rights, but they don't sanction Qatar, sauai arabia, china, vietnam because of the lack of freedom of speec and lgbtq rights. #Western Hypocrisy

Hard working Indians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis made this possible. Their misfortune was exploited. Their hard work deserves respect.

Almost all FIFA 2022 projects in Qatar were awarded and executed by Western companies, who recruited migrant workers. And, Western governments lobbied very hard to push Qatar not to change workers' policies to protect to their own Western companies.

Blood sweat and slavery essentially. The whole thing is totally unsustainable and to have in 50° heat game is on thinkable unconscionable.

A bit fluffy considering the circumstances of these poor migrate workers. Disappointing from DW

Seems they hide a lot in the public eye. Why cant people record freely in that country seems so mischievous.

How are they just gonna kinda gloss over the fact that they used "slave" labor to build those stadiums? I like DW but this seemed more like a commercial thab actual journalism

That the obscenely wealthy Qatari’s won’t even set up a compensation fund for migrant workers who die ( whose poor family’s will then struggle so much more ) is staggeringly disgusting
Shame on them 🤬🤬🤬

There's no problem in making your country rich, the problem is you sacrifice the lives of the migrant workers. Clearly Qatar cannot do it on their own having a relatively low population/work force. They will surely rely on other countries..

Pro-Qatar troll farms are hard at work in the comments.

FIFA must have done really well out of this, hand the World Cup to a country with no tradition of playing football and with a most unsuitable climate. The surveillance of journalists sounds like something one would expect in Russia or China.

Sharia is a main source of Qatari legislation. Take that as you will.

A fairly timid account of affairs. The underlying reality is a lot harsher than DW dares to address.

I live in Europe and it's funny to me how West Media showing the conditions of laborers in Qatar while in their own countries labourers live in a small rooms with 7 8 other people. Yes salary/wages might be the issue in gulf countries. Besides they are not slaves, they are labourers.
