Leverage the subject matter experts on your team, but do your homework!
If you're trying to build an understanding of an area of the code base, a product, or a service, you likely have teammates that know these areas very well.
It can save you a lot of time and headaches by leveraging the knowledge they already have.
However, I'd recommend you take a bit of time to explore and see if you can start off with your own understanding. Show that you've done a bit of homework and have them guide you based on the effort that you've put in to start things off.
