Fortnite DirectX 11 vs DirectX 12 vs Performance Mode (Explained, Compared & Suggestions!)

Hey my name is Jason AKA Peezs,

In this video, I briefly explain the differences, advantages and disadvantages of DirectX 11, DirectX 12 and Performance mode while showing performance comparisons in the background. Then, I go on to talk about whether performance mode is worth using and which DirectX version you should use.

These tests were done on 1080p (Native Resolution) with everything low and 3D res on 100%. Allow Multithreaded was turned On. PC specs are listed below.

For all the people who are about to comment their specs and ask if Dx 11 or Dx 12 or Performance mode will be better: As I said in the video, you need to try Dx 12 yourself for a few days and see if it's stable. If not, switch back to Dx 11. If both feels roughly the same, stick to dx 11 as it has a lower input delay. Also, I gave a general guide that you can follow based on what GPU you have at around 3:10.

Update (Feb 3rd, 2021):
Performance mode seems to be more optimized now and can deliver a much smoother experience. If you need more fps and you don't mind the look, I highly recommend switching to it!

Side note:

-People with less than 8GB of ram will have a "worser" looking performance mode, their builds will look more similar to mobile graphics. In contrast, people with more than 8GB of ram will have a performance mode that looks more similar to mine.

-GTX 1660 Is by no means a "low end" card, but when compared to the rest of the RTX lineup, it is indeed in the lower end of the spectrum in Nvidia's lineup. Does that mean that it's bad? No. Is it "low end"? Not necessarily.

Just so u know dx12 has lower input delay, it shows higher because it doesn’t count the higher frame rate input, use dx 12 in 99% of situations

my pc worked so much better with dx11 but i think they changed it in an update but im on performance mode and my game keeps on dropping a lot of fps any fix to this

I play on DX12 with high settings since i have a good system (RTX 4080).

But whenever i set the “Effects” setting on “Epic”, i still get the same performance but at the most random moments my fps drop to around 40 - 0 for a second.

Happens like 3 to 4 times per match, but still gets annoying as it sometimes happens during a fight. Anyone familiar with this? Or what should i do?

This is so weird to me because I just got back into fortnite and it changed all my previous graphics settings. I was running on dx12 and it gave me nothing but bad looking images and input lag, then I tried dx11 and I was back to 144 fps. Keep in mind I have a 3070 with a ryzen 7 5800x. In theory I should be able to use dx12 and it look and feel better than dx11 but it’s the opposite for me.

I used to use dx12 before performance mode came out...I have a 2080TI ....I kinda want to go back to dx12 because the game is just ugly..but when i switched back it always didnt feel as good..so that may be what you said I have to use it for a few days to get my dx12 back to normal...do you recommend using textures on high? Also if i have my boost+ on what is the setting in the drivers i need on other then power mgmt mode: prefer max performance
