Unless your chickens are a breed made from concrete I think they'll be fine. The pond seems great, over time it will evolve and it'll tell you if anything needs to be tweaked. Looks very pleasant!

The duckweed really adds a lot of beauty.

The hens are going to go bonkers when little frogs start singing in the pond--My crew caught a frog recently, It was brutal. You are providing a habitat and water source for so many insects and little living things. Chickens are smart. I doubt they will just fall in the pond. The dock is a good idea.

Love this. Planning on adding one between my veg garden and my nut tree grove. It will be a fall project so the temperatures are a bit more tolerable, and the water is more plentiful.

I have a small pond like that for my ducks. My chickens drink out of it, and I have had no issues.

The people who are obsessed about the chickens falling in and drowning should realize one thing: all living beings die, pond or no pond. Don't want to build a death trap sure but bodies of water exist in nature. In the end, you can't prevent deaths in life: your life, my life, the chicken's life.

Very nice, the chicken seem to be enjoying it. if you add any fish at all would add might be mosquito fish if you see them breeding in the pond other wise be a waste of time i think. Chickens aren't stupid i don't think you will find them diving in for a swim. Great way to provide them with some natural filtered cool water.

I foresee a buffet of myriad tiny toadlets.

I certainly wouldn’t be concerned about chickens getting stuck in that. An adult hen would have no difficulty at all getting out of it, and they’re highly unlikely to get in, the shallow slope and the surrounding rocks provide perfectly safe access. Chicks might inadvertently try to walk on the duckweed, but again, the water/land margin is shallow enough and has sufficient footing for them to get out easily. I would have no concerns about my chickens around this pond (and I’ve been keeping chickens for over 20 years).
The thing about the board is that small creatures trying to get out will swim around the edges of the pond, and go under the board rather than going out to where the board meets the water. Again, though, I think the vegetation/rocks at the edge make this pond very easy to escape for small creatures, so I wouldn’t have any real concerns.

I wonder if stapling some hardware cloth to the top of the board and then allowing the end to settle into the pond would be a simpler construction solution and easier for any swimmers to exit.

Chickens can actually fly! They would just panic and flap their way out.

Jesus is said to have said Love My Neighbor. Good heavens, I wish you were my neighbor, it would make that so easy. You folks are all so inspiring and amazing. Got me back in school for plant science after dropping out (and moping) of music and art. God bless you and those like you (-'however you see Divine blessings).

I think the hens will love it and there will be frogs!

It's a living thing. I'm wondering about rigging a fence. They can fly over the pond if the spirit moves, but just in case the autopilot fails, perhaps even a short fence that would blend in might be enough. A board that goes side to side means less swimming to climb out. Might be an upgrade.

Our pond is roughly 20'x30' and 4' deep. We love our fish, but even with heavy vegetation there are way too many waste products in the pond. I've contemplated creating a runoff pond to absorb some of the nutrients from the main pond.

You are over thinking birds getting caught in the pond. Most won't go in. Those that do will get out. They aren't stupid. If you do fish a good choice is mosquito fish. They are native to the NE, they are small like guppies, and they eat mosquito larva. Good choice for a small pond.
