OVERGROWN ISLAND Cleanup In The Middle Of The UNITED STATES

I drive by this island almost everyday. We contacted the people who own the lake and ask them if we could clean it up. After a couple weeks of working on how we could make this happen, we finally got on the island. We uncovered a lot of erosion that had killed a bunch of trees. Along with some overgrown bushes and grass we got it cleaned up so they can utilize the island again.

Good afternoon Brian, This lake used to be owned by the Walt Keeler company back in the 60's - 70's. Don't know when they finally sold it & the property. This is a cool piece of property on the west side of Wichita. ❤
I'm glad your cleaning/Clearing it up. This place use to be kept would ride their boat's, ski dos, out to the island to fish, BBQ, campfires, camping.... fond memories

I am imagining it would be cool to garden there with beautiful native shrubs and flowers and turn it into a view to enjoy.

I just can't see the point in clearing an island. It's a safe haven for wildlife and insects. We need more places like this for nature .

I am not sure if you are aware of this but typically, growth on a eroded.Shore is a good thing to have.Because it slows down the actual erosion. Now that this has been trimmed away, it's gonna erode twice as fast.😢

It was a mistake to cut down the vegetation on the edge of the island, the excitement will follow. The trees and all the vegetation help prevent further eroding and disappearing. Cleaning it of garbage and organizing it a little would be ideal but plants are fundamental.

I live on a HUGE lake. We leave all our islands in their natural state. Can't even imagine why someone would want to "clean" it up. Oh, and the bass love the trees and overhang. Giving the fish structure and a natural way to avoid the heat.

Plant some trees in the cleared spaces. Fruit trees for animals to eat. Shade trees to hold the sand from eroding.

Well that was fun! Best photo shot was sunset with beachfront. Most hilarious was weed whacking and push mower moments. Great job guys!!!

I was a bit worried for the critters. I would have moved a few of those spiders to a remaining tree. They are part of the ecosystem.

I find this small island to be wild and beautiful, but the owner wants to clean it up and turn it into a neat park for relaxation.

You do realize by removing those plants at the waters edge that would have trapped more sand. The island will now degrade more as more sand is eroded away. Plants and roots act to stabilize erosion.

Living here in The Great Lakes state (Michigan) and being an outdoors lady, I understand the importance of the vegetation along and around lakes. Our DNR ( Department of Natural Resources) have laws governing these areas. In many instances it's illegal to change the coastline of our lakes. Wild life depend on these natural ocourances for shelter, shade and food.
You both worked very hard on this project, but it's not my favorite scenario. I think it would have been nice to clear paths and have left stumps for sitting on and enjoying nature in its natural state.

Maybe the owners could plant grasses to hold the soil ❤❤

My guess is that to preserve the island if the company that owns it would be willing to introduce some indigenous vegetation to the sandy soil that could minimize or stop the erosion. And also add a layer of small rock along the shoreline that wiil hold the sand. (I used to to do this kind of work professionally to restore eroded riverbanks and lake shores.) Great job though, the little island has alot of potential.

Wow, that went from "overgrown" to a dirt patch with a few trees. I get that maintaining an island can be necessary, but the amount of habitat that was just decimated is unbelievable. Hopefully the owners will plant some shrubs to help hold on to the sand now that there isn't anything keeping it from washing away or wind erosion.

Awesome video. I was surprised by your mistake with the mower. I'm glad you didn't get hurt. It's a very small island with a lot of dead stuff. Those were nice fires. I hope someone will use it now.

As the bushes were just cut down and not actually removed, they will soon spring back to life. Necessary to prevent wind erosion of the sand on the island. Periodic cutting back will be good to aid fresh growth, but take care not to create an erosion problem. Also some dead wood of fallen trees provides a great habitat for birds and wild life.

I love being able to look through the trees now.

I hope the grasses (and weeds) grow back some to slow down the erosion.

So who’s Steve?

Isn't some of those down trees helping to keep the erosion down
