Everything You Need to Know about Net Zero

Net zero is a hot corporate buzzword today, but understanding what it really means is complex. Companies often set goals without a clear path to net zero emissions, or even an internal definition of what the term really means.

South Pole has been at the forefront of decarbonization since 2006. These are the basics of net zero as a concept, the strategies being employed, the basics of offsetting, the role of a price on carbon, and how companies are effectively - or not so effectively - reaching their climate goals.

For companies that have tackled the low-hanging fruit of lowering emissions, i.e. energy efficiency and renewable energy, committing to net zero emissions presents a strategy for addressing remaining emissions and requires new approaches applied to each step of the supply chain. Carbon offsets and nature-based carbon removals play a necessary role, in particular at the outset, when it comes to these so-called residual emissions. But many question how effective these tools are.
