The main story is that the plants were the main enemy, making people talk nonsense, and then making the move, go backwards, then committing suicide

For those who are wondering about the cause for why "the happening" was happening, the whole movie was implying either the wind or/and the plants were causing people to kill themselves. But at the end of the movie or was it the end credit scenes it shows a dude wearing earpieces so he wasn't affected. So it's actually a faint song or sound playing that's making the mass suicide. Not some toxic air or anything.

If I remember correctly the gas only affected people in anger or intense emotions. Which in an unknown situation would have alot of high emotions.
