What do to nod and to get the nod mean?

A nod and the verb to nod is a simple action with the head and it usually means that the 'nodder' is saying 'yes'.
To 'get the nod' always means to be approved by a person in a position to give approval.
In the context of our video the staff got the nod to go ahead with a project. When we understand what get the nod means we can easily imagine what it means if a coach of a football team turns round and looks at a substitute and the sub gets the nod, he will be playing a few minutes later.
Get the nod = get approval

That is an old expression, is it not? I haven't gotten the nod to use it in many places....I am sure friends would just look at me funny. But then again, they always do anyway....
