Tech Tip Tuesday: Kick Drum dampening. Yes or No?
.
.
.
There is a big misconception about dampening drums.
Although, one of the biggest misconceptions of them all is how we dampen and tune the kick drum.
Most drummers will throw a pillow inside a kick drum and tune up the batter side head to just above finger tight.
That may be a way to do it, but that’s not the only way, nor is that the most beneficial way.
Taking the time to tune your bass drum sets the foundation to allow dampening to enhance what is already there, not cover up your inability to tune that bass drum.
In this example, I have the resonant side drum head (Remo Suede Powerstroke 3) tuned a perfect 5th above the batter side drum head (Remo Powerstroke 3 clear).
The batter side is about two or three full turns above finger-tight, allowing the drum head some give while still delivering a present and beefy kick drum sound.
As you can hear, the kick drum sounds fine without dampening, but the thin blanket helps dial in more of that low end which delivers a chest-bumping punch!
Sooooooo, What do you guys think? Which version of the kick drum did you like more, wide-opened or dampened? How much dampening do you use in your kick drum? Leave a comment. Let’s talk about it!
PS: A lot of what I said is an option that I have tested over the past four years. I just wanted to be clear with you guys. That way, you know what you are reading. I hope this information is helpful.
Love you, guys!! Okay. Byeeeee. 🥁🤓👊🏻❤️🙏🏻
