Eurasian Jays are among the least social and socially evolved corvids, but this sequence shows a probable male Jay asserting his position in the local hierarchy by displacing a juvenile Jay of lower social status.

Our NA Bluejays are somewhat more socially evolved than Eurasian Jays, but they still displace each other to assert dominance, or at feeding sites and food sources in this manner. Even bonded pairs rarely feed side by side outside the spring and summer months. The same holds for many species of the generally more socially evolved crows.

Unlike most passerine birds, and monogamous animals in general, corvids are male dominant within a pair. Male Jays, Jackdaws, and crows have no qualms about stealing from food caches of their protesting mates.
