The mandras of Lemnos

Welcome to the world of Lemnos and its kehaghiades. On the island where farming and stock-breeding traditions goes back to Antiquity, the “mandra system”, a unique agricultural production system is still in use today. This traditional land management system -with its roots lost in time- has allowed farmers to survive and be self-sufficient for centuries. The system has been named after the iconic “mandras” of Lemnos, complex farming structures which serve the needs of the kehaghiades. Today, the system adapts to modern needs and allows the kehaghiades to envision a sustainable development for their island, with respect to the natural environment and the deep connection of its people with the land.
