XAMPP now comes with *php_xdebug.dll* already all you have to do is create the line with no full path like this
*zend_extension = php_xdebug.dll*

For anyone following this guide now, instead of going to localhost:"port" go to localhost/"Folder in htdocs"/index.php This assumes you have created a folder inside of xampp/htdocs with the index.php file inside of it.

Thank you so much, I followed the exact steps and was able to get XDebug running with VS Code!!! 1 question. The "settings.json" is to be configured for each project or globally within VS code, it should work for all other projects too? Same for "launch.json" file. Is that for every project or globally? Yeah except where to change the settings in VSC this sucks for a new VSC user I have it running in XAMPP but can't figure out how to put it in the settings.
