As a 60 veteran woodworker, I hereby testify that this is the most concise and comprehensive tutorial on plane tuning. Well done Michael!

I've only just started using hand planes with my woodworking projects. Thanks for the video. Learned a lot!

I just picked up an old stanley no. 9 and its beautiful. It was in pretty rough shape so I took it all apart and cleaned it. I know nothing about planes though and I cant for the life of me get it set up properly. I wish I could find a step by step video on how to set this exact plane up. I've seen some videos but none of them are for dummies like me lol

when i send the blade out to make a cut, it closes off the throat and the spirals choke the process. no adjustment for throat.

If you're tuning up an old plane because that's all you can afford, an expensive Hock blade is not an option. Just spend some time honing the old blade.

What is the brand of the joining guide? Veritas?

Great vid: just the facts, no nonsense.

I have that same honing jig, don't like it for my chisels, as the "narrow" chuck is rounded on one side. Anyone have any thoughts on a better way to do chisels or modify the guide? I've done a little filing to square off the rounded side and to make the part that grabs the chisel a bit wider (it was only a narrow V-notch; chisels wouldn't sit flat in it.)

Thanks for any tips!

What you failed to mentioned that when you have an adjustable throat plane, if you focus sanding on the front too much you can ruin the sole of the and cause the throat ways will not be parallel to the over sanded toe of the base the sole hast to remain perfectly parallel to the machined toe rails! If you have the throat close tight when sanding creating a front body angle on the sole, when you open plat up you will fell asleep at thefronof the plane. You have just ruined the plane and it will have to be machine shop corrected! In know I did this! So just sanding to remove a little rust is fine but removing all pits or hollows is a shop process on this type of plane.

if you have a new plane your only 5 min away from shavings, when you have an old plane, trow it away and buy a new one...what a waste to replace that blade.it could have served you for many years by giving it 10 more min then a new one.after that its only mainainance just like with a new blade. waste of money

Finding a piece of glass like that is not easy.

Lets take this vintage plane that you paid $25.00 for and put in a $50.00 blade.

replace the c-mon man, your better than that.  Tune that blade and you'll see another 30 years if kept up.  Throw the blade out!....man, .I expected more
