T-Mobile Franklin T10 - New Entry Level LTE Mobile Hotspot Device

T-Mobile is now selling the Franklin T10 mobile hotspot device, which appears to be a replacement for the Franklin T9, a slightly older model.

The T10 and the older T9 it replaces both have the same Cat-4 cellular modem that supports T-Mobile bands - the primary difference between the two is the Wi-Fi capability. The T10 comes with simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) while the T9 supports Wi-Fi 4. Additionally, the T10 uses USB-C for the charging and tethering port, while the T9 uses a micro-USB port.

Will it operate without the battery and just plugged in to an AC outlet?

Until the price of 5G hotspots comes way down, the Franklin T10 should be fine for most users. After using a Franklin R850 without any problem for six years, I just received the Alcatel Linkzone 2 as a replacement due to shutting down the Sprint network. It has a large 4400 mah battery. However, the hotspot will not operate without the battery. So I need to unplug the charger every day or risk battery swelling up and then hotspot will not work. The Franklin T10 will operate without a battery. For this reason alone, I may send the Alcatel back and get the T10. I can always power the T10 with a USB C power bank or charger if the battery dies.

My hotspot acts strangely sometimes speed wise. like sometimes it has pretty good download speed (20-30 mbps) but really bad upload speed (1-2 mbps) and its like the speed switch roles as in then i have really bad download speed (2-4 mbps) and pretty good upload speed (6-8 mbps). and its randomly throughout the day, not during certain or "peak" times. any idea why it's doing this?

I have a T10. Under "Settings", "Device", "Preferences", what does "Smart Charging Enable" with an on/off toggle mean? Even after looking at the T10 manual online, the setting is not listed at all. Thanks!

I am looking to use it for wifi to an indoor motion detection camera in a nursing home setting. I need to know if it will connect independent of the facility's house wifi. And will it work to simply buy a sim card when it needs data? And how much data might be needed in that setting? Thanks for any help

Does this only work for RV mobile or can it be use for home Hotspot. Also I have Hotspot on my t mobile phone would it help me make better connections and does the mobile Hotspot add to my data use.

Thanks, I had not caught this one yet. I have to say though that notwithstanding its modest specs, my experience with the Franklin T9 has been useful, for one very specific reason: its sensitivity is very good on Band 71 - substantially better than the Netgear LM1200 router we typically use for T-Mobile. There are only very few routers supporting B71 with external antenna ports. Since we We only do boondocking, external antennas are a must, so we hacked in two external antenna ports on a T9. This is obviously not an easy mainstream thing to do, but it got us out of a pickle a few times when nothing else was workable. It shows that sometimes a simple yet well designed product can stand tall. Good radio Frequency design is still a differentiator.
