Germany: Domestic and Foreign Policy

Why is the German system so stable...because they didn't create it. The British, French and Americans did. No foreign strategic policy = no military = no war. A fool-proof plan...right?

I don’t normally comment on videos. I like this video and agree with his take, but i think there are a few historical inaccuracies. Britain, USA and France did not create the Basic Law-the german Parlamentarischer Rat did, with the features he describes designed to avoid a repeat of the Weimar Republic. Germany has had an independent foreign policy post-war, arguably too independent. Think of Brandt’s Ostpolitik and Kohl’s reunification initiative. Of course there are people in the old East who are more pro Russian as well as on the left of the SPD, the so-called Russlandversteher. There is a long tradition of rapprochement between Russia and Germany dating back to Rapallo post WW1.

Slight correction: Half of the seats in the German parliament are elected by “direct vote” I.e. winner takes all. Half of the seats are filled by the parties on a proportional basis. As a result Germans have two votes: one for a candidate and one for the party. It is common to split the vote between the direct candidate and the party vote.

Congratulations Peter Zeihan. This is the first video in Youtube's history in which an American is talking about Germany and is not talking complete nonsense.

Another reason for the relative stability of the german political system is, that you nearly always need to govern in a coalition-government. Either on the federal or state level. That limits the degree to which you can badmouth other parties because you may need be able to form a coalition with (few exceptions) everybody else.

Great audio quality(?) (something about the sound of the audio - maybe the way the sound fills up the space more than before - really lulled me into a related state - I enjoyed it). Funny enough, at the start, I had to actively refocus on the words and their meaning, but it was fine by the end. Probably net improvement.

Not such a bad analysis for somebody not being a German citizen! As a matter of fact many Germans would not be able to explain it this thoroughly.

Great content. Suggestion for a future video in quieter times: Zeihan on Packing. As in for travel, although I suppose the other implication would be interesting too.

Well it isnt really a "significant portion" of the Hamburg port.
Its <25% of one Terminal in the Hamburg port which doesnt even make them own the infrastructure as that is leased out

This is how representative democracy works in Sweden, as well. And I would think in the other nordic countries.

It's always amazing to me that World leaders either don't know history, understand it or just choose to ignore it. In the year 1900, Europe was at peace, new technologies promised to improve the lives of everyone over time and Nations would now complete commercially and leave war behind. 14 years later, Europe would be the center of one of the bloodiest conflicts in human history. In 1918, when the War ended, before all the bodies were even buried, no one in Europe would have imagined the horrors of the 2nd World War. How German leaders can think that the thoughts and desires of 1900 are still possible is beyond me. Mark Twain said, "History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes". Germany needs to do what Japan has done and move production to markets that consume their products, have sustainable labor forces and energy supplies. The Greens need to admit the the Green New Deal can't work, but that we can still clean-up are pollution and still live comfortable lives and prosper. Nuclear Plants need to be turned back on and Germany needs to tap their own gas supplies by allowing Fracking. Time to Grow-up and face reality as it is, not as you wish it to be.
