It makes sense that the Earth Kingdom has so many places occupied by other nations— it’s huge and has the most livable area by a long-shot (the water tribes are in the freezing cold, the fire nation is full of volcanoes, there are only 4 air temples), and it also makes sense that it has the smallest percentage of benders because of the whole balance thing. I’m assuming the earth kingdom still has a total number of benders that dwarfs the other nations because of the sheer size of it.

Pretty sure the Sand Benders are based on the Turkic Uyghurs of the Tarim Basin with some MENA thrown in.

I think ATlA is inspired by east asia like the biggest empire is the earth kingdom, earth kingdom has the biggest population and also china, earth kingdom not centralized china was also not centralized for 1000s of years, Japan =fire nation
