***Since filming the video I've done a few things. Shortened the chain a pair of links. Added the Wolftooth. I've taken it on some short rides around town and it works. It's not pretty, but it works. AGAIN: I DON'T OFFICIALLY RECOMMEND YOU DO THIS. It's a bit of a bodge, but I am experimenting with other solutions right now (swapping out the lower cage, using a GX mech with Gevenalle shifters, etc., ) The search for #BUDGETMULLET continues.

Awesome - I have been exploring doing something just like this on a future gravel bike build. Great video.

‘You’ll never fit a 50T on that’
Russ - ‘hold my beer while I wind out that B screw’ :D

Nice! I'm going for the 11-50t on my 9speed. It'll be an awesome jump from a 12-36t w/38-28. Thanks for the tips and keep up the great work✌😄👍🚲

I really want to trim about 2 or 3 inches from that cable housing. 🤣

Interesting to see what happens when the chain and cassette are under load or going up hill 😀🚴🏻‍♂️

Exactly my intent with my Surly Wednesday! Monster adventure bike with drop bars, 26" fat and 11 speed 1X.

I'm running a e*thirteen TRS Plus 9-46 11-speed cassette with a GRX rear mech and 36t Wolftooth drop stop ring. This gives me 511% range without needing the road link. I did need to install an XD driver on my hub ($100) and the cassette costs more than the Sunrace (~$200), but is is also lighter (339g) than almost all of the other wide range cassettes on the market. I recommend getting the latest Gen2 version of the cassette (FW2TPA-101).

I have been using it a little over a month now and love it. Shifting is solid and the range is amazing.

Great video. I am running a 10-36 10 speed cassette on a stock Tiagra derailleur with no modifications. They are paired up to Gevenalle 2x10 cx shifters.

Still one of my favorite videos! Love how tickled you got when it worked !

I’d run a chain entirely made of quick links and not think twice haha

The road link and less chain length must have helped the shifting on the smaller cogs?

WOW, You're an explorer and we keep learning from you. Thanks.

I've been running a sunrace 10-46 (which is the same range as a 11-50) on my apex 1x11 groupset and it's been running all good, need to get an xd driver but my bike came with that so hey

Fun to do. I have an MTB crank with a 40T front chainring and the Sunrace 11-46 and the Apex 1x shifters. Works fine for me, just had to work the B-Screw more than normal when indexing. Don't really miss the FD at all.
Enjoy tinkering!

11-46 seems like a good range. Hopefully SRAM will release 12 speed rival 1x next year officially. I think the chances are pretty good since last year we got the 12 speed electronic.

I mean. Sure.
I'm pretty happy running 8spd (or 9spd, if you're feeling frisky) in a 11-32, with a 32/44 double up front. I could swap the cassette out to 11-34 or 11-36 if I needed more low end, I suppose.
I guess I'm just not sold on 1x on a road/gravel/all road bike. On my MTB, absolutely- I've been running 1x there since 1999. But I'm a lot more sensitive to cadence on drop bar bikes, so I'll happily run a front derailleur.
My $0.02.

Keep the Wolf Tooth in your pocket. I've done similar with shimano parts and cheap 11-40 on an old triple. All worked well until the 40t. Put on the Wolf Tooth. NO PROBLEMS. All shifts well and with the triple (28-38-48) I get some awesome gearings. Nice job! Just take your Wolf Tooth with you as your new chains stretch, you might have a problem.
I wonder if the weight difference between a triple with 3 rings up front + front derailleur + extra shifter is a wash with the system you are using with a single up front, no front derailleur, no front shifter, but the massive weght of the 11-50 cassette you are using. Maybe time for a vid showing those systems side by side ( or even a double up front if you can't find a triple). Would be interesting to see the weight differences. Love my triples. Have them on 3 bikes with 11-40 out back. Thanks for the great vids. Keep the supple side down!
