Modbus is a data communications protocol originally published by Modicon (now Schneider Electric) in 1979 for use with its programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Modbus has become a de facto standard communication protocol and is now a commonly available means of connecting industrial electronic devices.

Modbus is popular in industrial environments because it is openly published and royalty-free. It was developed for industrial applications, is relatively easy to deploy and maintain compared to other standards, and places few restrictions - other than the datagram (packet) size - on the format of the data to be transmitted.

This guy really makes it easy to understand Modbus and it’s configurations. Breaks it all down into simple terms we can all comprehend. This is by far the best video on the topic I have found. Thank you for helping us all out and greatly appreciate you sharing this!

Well explained video, however Client (Master): The client initiates communication by sending requests to the server. It reads and writes data by sending Modbus function codes and data frame requests. The client is typically a device like a SCADA system, PLC, or HMI that needs data from field devices or wants to control them.

Server (Slave): The server is a device that responds to the client’s requests. It usually contains the data or the registers the client needs. Devices such as sensors, actuators, and PLCs are often servers in a Modbus TCP network. They hold registers or data that are read or written by the client.

In this communication model, the client controls the communication by requesting data, while the server responds to those requests without initiating communication. So I believe per your presentation, the PLC should be client requesting for data from field devices(Server) which have data of interest

Another well explained video. It never goes wrong when a video is very helpful in understanding of a concept or protocol being explained in a simple to understand way to grasp the concept in basic understanding and you did that very well here. I understand what Modbus is, but i'll admit i'm also not closed minded at all in that someone else can explain it in a different way and i get a whole different understanding in my mind core or what I thought I understand, now understanding it much better. Such is learning.

In several references, they said that In Modbus TCP/IP, the server is the field devices that provide data after the PLC (client) sends a command. This is the opposite of what you described. Can you explain this more? Thank you so much.
