There is much more to an portrait than aperture, shutter speed, ISO. Something that is rarely considered by beginners is the effect of focal length on the subject matter itself. Focal length also greatly effects the appearance of your subject as well as your back ground. Take a look!

Thank you very much. I've seen countless videos on you tube and no one made it so simple clear and straight forward as you.

Really GREAT question. These focal lengths are all for Full Frame cameras. If you have a crop sensor, you will want to multiply the lens you use by 1.6x. 50mm on a crop sensor is going to be fine (50 x 1.6= 80mm). You CAN use 24mm, 35mm on both full & crop sensors, it just depends on what you are trying to do, distance from camera to subject, placement, direction they are looking etc.

Yes, Canons new 8-15mm fisheye zoom. Fisheyes introduce a lot of distortion (obviously) but it helps teach the point emphatically in a way that is impossible to miss. I think many viewers may look at the 24mm vs 200mm comparison and not really see the difference in her nose and eyes. Thanks for the question!

Good, simple, direct, with good examples/examples.
For a low budget vid, I give it straight A's.
The audio was even decent! Lots of folks screw up on the audio. Bravo.

wonderful video... love the effects on the door. Never knew that can happen as the max length of lens i use ends at 50mm on a crop. Really helpful!!!

While I knew this, kind of- I had never experimented with the actual shots. You explanation and examples were awesome! Great work.

Pretty much. Just multiply your focal length by 1.6x. Its a rule of thumb however and I do know many photographers who can get away with slower shutter speeds at greater focal lengths.

MichaelTheMentor Your videos are just really really great.  The way you present information is just far superior to most available out there.  Your explanations are extremely easy to follow and I have learned a tremendous amount of information from watching your videos.

When people have questions about a certain technical detail regarding photography, 99% of the time, when I remember seeing a great video about any given topic, it is one of your videos and I send them to your channel and recommend your videos.

Thanks

Even the old Transformers reference at the end :)  I'm an 80's kid...  I understand these things

It wont be as noticeable from a distance. A 30mm lens on a T4i is really a 48mm lens, so it is going to be very hard to pick up, especially for a group shot. You may however see some distortion in the edges, but this is also marginal and correctible in post.

Michael this was great. Very educational. I will check out the DVD Crash course. Anne looks amazing too!

the further back you are, the less distortion. There is a trade off of size to distortion when using very wide focal lengths.
