Getting past plastic | Sharon Hammond | TEDxOrlando

With global plastic production reaching close to 300 million metric tons, the world increasingly lives in what's been called a 'throw away society'. With all of the dangers of plastic being well documented and well understood, why are we more reliant on plastic than ever? And what can we do about it? Sharon Hammond shares the story of the #LastStraw campaign and makes a strong case for why plastic straws are such a great place to start. Sharon Hammond is the Program Director of the Hive Orlando. The Hive is a program started five years ago by Ideas for Us, an Orlando-based GNO. The goal is to get citizens to discuss global issues on a local level. The founders wanted to bring campus style activism and connection to a community setting.

Nice! Surprisingly, plastic straws were banned here in Rio de Janeiro, too! Looks like it's a movement. Also, awareness is up. I'm seeing more reusable cups (Starbucks) and people (me) trying to reduce plastic use.

Good thing, but I am resignating a little bit, because getting the people emotional enough to change something with the subject of straws seems a little hard. Still good though. And I am the first one btw.
