As someone who lives in the great white north of Maine i can proudly say that we get DRASTIC temperature drops and rises, 100 degree summers -40 degree winters.
1) For the temperature changes it's all about planning your cloths for the season
2) breathable layers is always good but don't over do it, you'll sweat in the cold if you bundle up too much and that's a really bad thing
3) and for the summer just get an AC and a huge fan to move the air around your apartment/house.

I'm a hot sleeper on a memory foam mattress so I have to chill my apartment to 57 degrees F (its 75-80 degrees F outside during the night and stupid humid all the time) to sleep well. I've been looking into this chiliPad which works basically like a water-heated/cooling mattress topper. You might want to check it out with your issues sleeping in the heat.

For the whole heat thing I sleep with a fan and 2 light blankets so I can adjust to the temperature and for the nightmares I used to suffer from stress dreams so Id keep a glass of water to splash myself If I had successive dreams so Id kill the sleep cycle and start a new one. But honestly everybody has their own cures and most of them don't work. Hope you get better though.

the weather in the uk fluctuates a tonne, i normally have to move my settup out of my room just so i dont die from the heat in summer, in the winter i just wrap up like a catapiller XD
