Yo! Would love to hear what you guys think about Tesla's "ethical dilemma" - lmk what you think if you have a second!

Have a great day!

I've got a stupidly large position in Tesla, but if they think they can share their IP without harming themselves, I'm all in favour: a) there are plenty of ways it could end up benefiting Tesla - free advertising, and a greater supply of the batteries they're so constrained on and b) even if not the world is vastly more important than my investment - it's not even a comparison.

Licensing is the plan I think. Not giving it away.

Dillon, You have a talent for translating the financial speak of Executives. Today you "translated" and provided a lot of clarity around the Panasonic and Tesla relationship and gave me a lot of value. Please continue to do this! You da Man!

Re ethical dilemma, I’m convinced that the most that can be done for a sustainable future is for Tesla to dominate the EV market. No one but Tesla will push as hard, and the harder Tesla pushes, the harder their competitors are forced to push

I took from that interview that Tesla were not sharing their technology with Panasonic, otherwise they would not need to be producing a prototype. So essentially Panasonic will be producing a different battery with the same form factor. This will allow the cells to be used in the new cell to chassis model Y’s. My guess is that they will be used in the lower range/performance models, or possibly alongside Tesla’s batteries if Tesla’s control systems can cope with different chemistry/performance batteries in the same vehicle.

EV world is coming regardless of these cells, let the competition invest in their own research to grow. Tesla has given enough,

It is to Tesla's advantage to share the 4680 tech with Panasonic as long as they only produce 4680 cells for Tesla. That way only Tesla is benefited by the cell and they can transition faster to 4680s which is the real huge benefit to Tesla.

Thanks Dylan. Tesla’s relationship with Panasonic has been very beneficial to date. Elon has clearly stated many times that battery supply is going to be a serious problem going forward. To have an exisiting partner with massive knowledge about battery manufacture working alongside you can only be beneficial. Between the two companies, I feel confident that a better 4680 cell will be the outcome. It’s very possible Tesla and Panasonic might develop a similar production relationship at Giga Berlin and Giga Texas to the one they have at Giga Nevada. Both companies win!

Properly compensated, probably not a big mistake to license battery tech. Long TSLA.

They should offer an option to license. This creates profits for the shareholders. Nothing should come for free. I think most companies will not pay a licensing fee. I think it’s an ego thing. They all think they can do it on their own.
And they will.

Same goes for the supercharging network. Charge the company and a slight premium for non-Tesla’s car owners using the network. Each company can decide if they want to be part of it. This creates income from every EV not just Tesla’s. With that extra income they build more and stay the market leader.

You're spot on about the ramping of Panasonic's 4680 cells production, it will happen full scale only in 2022 IMHO...

All of the technology Tesla gives Panasonic should be used exclusively for batteries sold to Tesla. If others want some of it, they must pay Tesla. There’s no free lunch.

There's no ethical dilemma. Elon has said from the very beginning that if Tesla failed, and all it accomplished was to push mobility towards a sustainable future, that he would have succeeded. Anyone who doesn't get that shouldn't invest in Tesla.

If tesla did not share it’s 4680 chemistry and processes with Panasonic and other battery manufacturers, they wouldn’t have enough batteries to put in the car as they manufacture. No cars, no sales. Talk about fiduciary duty!
My first guess on where the bulk of currently manufactured 4680 cells are going to go, is Berlin. This, as I understand it, is where they will begin producing the cell to structure configuration. It is also possible that they will be using them for the early release semi’s.

speculation: What IF Tesla agreement with Panasonic is any batteries panasonic can make and Tesla can't buy - Panasonic can sell to anyone.
Same agreement with ALL other battery makers. Or we could say Tesla has the first option to buy.

One manufacturer cannot make all the batteries TSLA needs so working with other makers makes sense since TSLA will be their client for the 4680 since they are the only maker that can use the cells in their cars. If they tell them how to make it and the others are putting up the money to make them for TSLA we continue to win as it pushes the mission, helps keep supply steady and expands the ability to meet GROWING DEMAND for batteries across all of their products except the solar roof. TSLA has a need for batteries that will far outstrip how many cars they will produce this year. Global demand for storage and powerwalls is beyond what they currently have supply for. We don't loose if they get as many people on board to make these batteries. I'm cool with it since the other car makers are battery constrained and loosing money on every compliance vehicle they are making in 2021.

Licensing obviously, if not we can all sue Elon.

In the sentence "There is a concern that Tesla will compete" when you read it you did put a "not" there. So which one is the correct? What is written or what you read?

Sadly, MBA trained only see ruthless competition, employees as liabilities, lawyers thru patents to lean toward monopoly.
vs
Tesla/Elon approach more about cooperation/ethical behavior, employees as assets; innovation on both making product & product for customer use.
