MAIN BEACH BYRON BAY 🇦🇺
This is the most popular beach in Byron Bay. To appreciate why its panoramic vista attracts people from all over the world you need only step down from the grassy knoll on to the fine white sand of the beach. Straight ahead is Julian Rocks, a marine reserve that accommodates over a thousand different species, including pods of dolphins and (from July to December) migratory whales. To the east you’ll see Byron’s iconic lighthouse dominating the headland. And if you look west you’ll get a stunning view of Mount Warning and the hinterland which is even more spectacular at sunset.

Just a short stroll from the town centre, Main Beach is also home to one of the oldest surf and beach safety organisations in Australia: Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), which was established in 1907. The section of this beach in front of the SLSC is patrolled throughout the summer: you’ll find the dates and times specified in the lifeguard services guide. North of it is a grassy park, a picnic area with barbecue, and a large children’s playground. You can park for up to four hours in a large beachfront car park, for $3 per hour (capped at $20 maximum) or free of charge at the meter if you have pre-purchased Byron Shire residents annual parking exemption.

Near the car park you’ll find a number of showers; others are located in what used to be the public toilets attached to the Surf Life Saving Club. A block of automatic, self cleaning public toilets has been erected close by in the park.

For those with prams or strollers, a pathway runs alongside the beachfront and a wide ramp directly in front of the SLSC provides easy access to the beach. Main Beach can also be accessed from a number of tracks along the walkway to Clarkes Beach, many of them with a shower at the entrance and shady picnic tables nearby.

Facing almost due north, Main Beach features a number of small beach breaks which close out on the low tide and are suitable for beginners.
