2 digit addition carrying the ones using dienes blocks lesson 1

This lesson teaches the student to add 2 digit numbers with carrying using dienes blocks (MAB blocks)

Children will need dienes blocks (MAB blocks), maths paper and a pencil to complete the task.

The student is asked to follow the lesson, pausing at intervals when asked to do so. They then write the sum out and complete the computation using the lollipop sticks.

It is suitable for children who are 8 years and older.

This is only the tradaontial algorithm, but if you try other formats and strategies, you will have much better number sense. For example, print and lay your numbers and blocks SIDEWAYS, and you can start with the tens, - this will give you a good estimate of the final sum, even before adding the ones and adjusting for any extra ten(s). My 2nd year students could this in their heads!
