Kazakhstan really has a diverse landscape. It is blessed with steppes, beautiful desert landscape and pristine lakes and mountains. The Kolsay Lakes National Park is located only 10 km from Kyrgyzstan; there is a trail that brings you directly there, although border guards will appear to defend the sovereignty of their country. The lakes are called "the Pearls of Tien Shan", as they are located on the north slope of the Tian Shan Mountains. There is a paved road that brings you straight to the Lower Kolsay Lake. Also in this park is Lake Kaindy, which is only reachable by walking, horse or off-road vehicle. The lake was formed as a natural dam by an earthquake in 1911. Lake Kaindy is really unique because of the petrified fir trees that look like they are jutting out of the water.
