PARENTAL RIGHTS, OR CENSORSHIP? The Parents Bill of Rights Passed by Republicans

preview_player
Показать описание
House Republicans passed an education bill focused on "parental rights" in the classroom, making a major political statement as one of their first acts with a House majority. The bill, titled the Parents Bill of Rights, passed in a 213-208 vote with five Republicans and all Democrats voting against it. Many on the left oppose the bill, saying it's about bullying teachers and students, not empowering parents. Most on the right support the bill, arguing that Democrats think parents should not have control over their kids’ education. We will take a look at what both sides have to say, and then I'll give you my take. (Stay through the end screen for a special "Behind the Scenes" moment.)

Thanks Isaac, Republican here and I think I agree with you. Fed Gov should stay out. Parents should be "pushed" curriculums and pay attention. Visit school boards and pay close attention to what is going on. Push back where appropriate.

I plan to continue liking and commenting for the algorithmic engagement. Thanks again for creating a platform which I can genuinely trust to give both sides of the story

Among all the other things that are good about you bringing your work into this format is the ways that it creates a window into the subsequent dialouge. I'm heartened to see the reasonable responses and dialogue, and of course unsurprised by the smaller number of more extreme, partisan-shaped viewpoints. But it's another dimension of the discussion for your audience than is offered in the newsletter and podcast to see in real time the kind of feedback that you probably see all the time in your inbox.

Thanks Isaac. This was as easy to follow as your newsletter, and just as informative.

My thoughts on these bills is that I am concerned that these laws seem to only consider what conservatives "think" parents want. I agree that some items are needed in the reality of today (such as notification of shootings). However, when it comes to some of the points, was the child's view considered? Many times trans kids are scared of coming out to their parents as there is documented evidence of beatings, abandonment, and even worse. In addition, the world is changing rapidly and our children should be given an education that provides them with the tools to enter the world and be productive. Unfortunately, many parents (and politicians) are stuck in the past and are trying to impose old norms in a world where they don't apply anymore. Finally, I agree with the point that none of the proposed legislation seems to provide a means of increasing access to books, teachings, etc.

One suggestion, I really enjoy it in your newsletter when you put up 3 succint point for each side. It may make this video format easier for new people to appreciate this content if you do the same here.

As always, whether I agree with you or not, excellent job, Isaac. Conservative leaning independent here. This really should be a local school board issue partnership between parents, administrators, and the school board.

I concur with your take but not with the reason. I feel like schools should have more control at the federal level if we actually want to have reasonable education in the country.

Not learning about slavery because you went to school in the south shouldn’t be a thing.

I’ve had educated adults tell me that slavery wasn’t the primary reason for the US civil war. That shouldn’t happen. They shouldn’t be able to graduate without having that beat into their heads.

Education, should, be more standardized. The order in which you learn about topics. I should be able to move states without having to effectively restart entire educational school years, because this state teaches things in sixth grade that that one doesn’t until seventh.

Actual teachers in classrooms should still be able to express HOW they want to teach about a certain topic, but WHAT they teach shouldn’t be left up to local or even state governments. That gives too much power to stupidly loud Karen parents, and leads to wildly inconsistent educational systems.

On top of that, it leads to the inability to ASSESS schools effectively because they’re not even teaching the same things to the same school years. I SHOULD be able to give the SAME standardized test, nationwide, and see where my child sits. But I can’t even do that because so much of education is local.

So while I agree that the white, conservative, moronic Republicans just want to be able to ignore history and gay people, I can’t agree that the control should be local. That just leads to even more ignorant rednecks being created by a lack of education in red states.

Teach them. Whether their parents like it or not. It’s the only way out.

I like the format! And it doesn't seem to be recycled content from the newsletter, which I appreciate (unless I missed an article)
Constructive feedback on the video format:
1. The "what the right is saying" label is low contrast and hard to read in some shots because of its color and transparency (2:39). I like that it's there, but maybe it should be given more bold colors/opaqueness
2. The "swiping" transition is a little much, especially when done multiple times close together. I think cross fades and jump cuts would work better, with maybe 2-3 "swipes" per episode

I think I've been supporting Tangle for over a year at this point, so it's exciting to see you expanding what you do. Best of luck!

I really liked your mention of the various politicians…who did or did not support the bill. Great reporting as always. There is far too much government interference in our daily lives.

Great breakdown!! My take: what a shame our government is spending so much time and resources on an issue like this! Get some real work done, people!

Been a paid subscriber of Tangle for almost a year. This was my first video read. I had not read the issue on this topic. I enjoyed it and will watch more, but the newsletter will continue to be my go to.

Another Republican here and I agree; these rulings should be left up to local school boards. Parents need to be involved and knowledgeable about what their school boards are doing. The Federal government should not have a hand in this.
