You left a lot out. Howard Hughes treated her so badly because she refused his advances. Hughes hired Otto Preminger to direct the film Angel Face and instructed Preminger to make life for Jean as difficult as possible. There's a scene in the movie where Mitchum has to slap her across the face and when filming it Preminger kept instructing Mitchum to slap her harder again and again and again. Mitchum saw tears in her eyes and the next time he was told to do it again he instead went to Preminger and hard slapped him in the face and said "like that?" Mitchum then said "Otto, if you don't leave her alone I'm gonna beat the hell out of you" (kind of funny if you read that in his voice). I think Robert Mitchum was RKO's biggest star at the time and he would have carried out that threat, and after being slapped Otto knew it. Jean was left alone after that although Hughes continued to harass her until the contract was over. Hughes and Preminger were both creeps. Robert Mitchum was a hero on set and was known to stand up to/retaliate against Directors who mistreated any crew members in ways that only Robert Mitchum could. What a guy!

When you talk about an under appreciated or underrated actress Jean Simmons always comes to mind for the reason is that when you make acting look easy and you get it right the first time people just do not see your talent. With all her talent she starred in some of the biggest hits of 1950's and 1960's its unbelievable to realize that Jean's first Academy Nomination was not until 1969 when she was nomination for The Happy Ending. No nomination for what I think she should have won an Oscar for was Elmer Gantry (United Artists, 1960) everybody around like Burt Lancaster and Shirley Jones won their Oscars. Another film that she was superb in was Home Before Home (Warner Bros, 1958) playing a woman afflicted with mental illness. I saw an interview with Jean Simmons and she talked about what called, "Pucker Up The Ass" movies like Désirée, The Egyptian both 1954 and Demetrius and the Gladiators at least she had a sense of humor about these costume melodramas. Even in a film like Hilda Crane which is pure soap opera she makes you believe in her characterization even though it clichéd. I did get to meet Jean Simmons by accident I was visiting Santa Monica in 2000 and while i was waiting for the traffic light to change I was walking my little 10 pound terrier named Maria when this lady standing next to me ask me what my little dog's was. I told her that her was Maria and she was rescue and we briefly talked about dogs in general and as I am talking with this smartly dressed woman I realized by her voice it was Jean Simmons. I was hesitant to let her know that I knew who she was but I did and we spoke for a few more minutes and parted since we can directions. it must a lasted about 5 minutes. I was quite surprised when i found that she died from lung cancer nine days before her 81st birthday.

I loved her as Sister Falconer in Elmer Gantry, the story loosly based on the story based of evangelist Ammie Simple MacPherson.

She really does look like Vivian Leigh. She also looks kind of like Rooney Mara in certain pictures

I sometimes got a look of Elizabeth Taylor in Jean Simmons the face at certain angles, what a believable actress, beautiful, intelligent and underrated, I can't remember seeing a bad film of hers and I didn't know about Howard Hughes influence on her career, I know he was an eccentric but I didn't know he was so petty and devious, her husband stood up for her and I read how he told off Barbara Hutton for humiliating his wife over some jewellery, great research and content.

Ava Gardner nearly killed HH with a “flying” vase.

"Home Before Dark" is a particularly under-rated film. She's really great in that.

I have ALWAYS loved Jean Simmons. She exemplified everything (other than acting as I did not aspire to that field) I hoped to be as an adult when I discovered her during my teen years. I went as far as to dye my hair a similar color but I knew I was never a beauty in her class. I loved the fact that she was such a grounded person and of course I still love each and every part she played in her career. Does anyone know if her role in North and South as Orry’s mother was her final acting part? I also was fascinated by Vivian Leigh’s beauty and talent initially until learning of her emotional difficulties. That certainly did not diminish her performances in any respect, both these women had a certain class and intelligence, along with Rosalind Russell, that was inimitable. Rosalind was certainly the American version.
