Diet: Plant leaves as larvae; plant nectar as adults
Threats: Mostly unknown; anoles, tachina flies, and wasps as larvae
Life span: About six weeks as larvae

Accidentally grabbed hold of one of these while lifting the lid off the horse feed when I was 8 and this was the worst pain I’ve ever felt all I could do was cry and yell. There was so much pain my ears were ringing from how much I was straining to try to let the pain pass.. it felt like I put my hand on a red hot stove top and left it there for 10 seconds. This pain lasted for a few hours. The palm of my hand felt like it was on fire and I had the red burn rash for a few weeks. I would never want anyone else to ever experience this and especially not a little kid.

It should be noted that the ootheca of the Carolina mantis (Stagmomantis Carolina) looks just like a puss caterpillar. Rather clever mimicry making a tasty and defenseless egg sac look like a venomous caterpillar.
