4 Things I Wish I Knew at 20

As someone who started my YouTube channel making videos about studying, clearly I think there is value in learning to study effectively so that you get the best grades possible 📚 Way more opportunities will open up to you if you're able to perform well in tests. Simple.

But - I do think there are some CRITICAL life skills and life lessons that school just does not teach people. And I find it crazy that school still isn't teaching this stuff. So, in this video, I run through the 4 most important skills that I've taught myself (which are not taught in school).

Learn these 4 things and you'll have a very significant advantage over 99% of people on the planet. Fail to learn these skills, though, and I think you're way more likely to struggle to create a happy and prosperous life for yourself 🤔

Let me know in the comments if there are any other skills you'd add to this list!

About Me

I'm a lawyer, part-time YouTuber, son, brother, startup founder, fiancé, black coffee drinker and plant dad. I graduated from Cambridge University (where I studied French and Spanish), topped my law school class and now work for a corporate law firm in London as a trainee solicitor (which takes up a lot of my time)!

Around that, I'm a big fan of discovering new ways of thinking, of balancing work with life, and of performing to the very best of my ability. Ohh, and being happy. And I try to share all that on this YouTube channel 😀

Fun fact: I believe we massively overplay the role of “natural talent” 😮 AND… I also believe that TOGETHER, WE ARE ALL CAPABLE OF POSITIVITY, PRODUCTIVITY AND SUCCESS.

Hey Liam! 😊 I just want to thank you for your videos, they are definitely very helpful. As a professional with an ADHD diagnosis, modifying conducts and emphasizing on time management is very important for me. Thank you for adding value to our lives. Kind regards for you and Beth from Costa Rica.

Your point about school cycles leading to burn out when you get a job is spot on. I had trouble as well when I suddenly never had a break to breathe and was going at 100% year round upon getting my first full time job.

School never taught managing debt, how insurance works, the process of buying a house, how to draft a will, the process and implications for divorce, basically anything which has the largest impact on your mental and financial wellbeing.

The paradox of choice is something I really struggle with. I've recently managed to wrap my head around the importance of just choosing things (even if you're not 100% or even 50% sure about them) because that's far better than doing nothing long-term. Don't want to be left regretting the things I didn't do and staying stagnant in my comfort zone for too long out of fear of uncertainty.

Another good video. As an old lawyer, these tips are pretty much what have kept me enjoying the job so long. Sleep always try to put top of the list and I am sure I usually get at least 7 or 8 hours never mind 6 these days (not easy with work, hobbies and in my case babies who never seemed to sleep much yet I had work next day). The transition from student to first job (I have 2 trainee solicitor children who live at home at present so I see is a huge jump and I remember it from when I was a trainee too - the idea that you go from all that control and free time over your life other than studying and exams to having so very very little holiday or free time (particularly in my case as I married a teacher just before I started training and he had loads more time off than I did). However like most things people adjust and it is all fine.

Good stuff! I think I read somewhere that you cannot just...make up for your lost sleep with a couple of days of lying in bed all day. When you don't sleep enough, the damage is somewhat permanent, the more sleepless days you build up the more damage you do to your mind and body. When you get older, your body still needs as much sleep as before, but it has a harder time generating good quality sleep without you making the effort to build a sleeping pattern.

Hey Liam, another fantastic video, as always it was super helpful. Quick request if I may. You’re quite widely read and peruse some amazing books so I was wondering if you could possibly periodically create videos going through your top 10 books say, bi-yearly with a brief explanation of each discussing why you like those books. Kicking off with a video discussing your top 50 to date would be awesome. It would certainly help to expand my reading list. Anyways #JustAThought 👍🏽📚💡

Hi, In a future video could you explain the full journey you went through to get the job you have. That's what A-levels you did, work experience and placements.

I enjoy your videos a lot, the whole aesthetic and the editing is so good. Would you consider making a video about all the specific equipment you use, cameras, mics, etc. to create your videos? I'd be really interested to know.

Hi Liam, your videos always bring so much value, no matter the topic! I might not „need“ everything you speak about in my everyday life, but your videos are so full of information, so helpful and so well made, that I‘ll always watch them anyway! I‘ve been impressed every time! That you so much for this! :)

The whole problem of human being is that they are not a machine. I think everything will be sorted if we were more mechanistic toward life. The better you are being like machine, the better it is for you in the long term. To completely lose the sense of being human is the desired state. I think it would be better if we all become engineer and design things to automate the external realties of life as much as possible. Read the works of Jacque Fresco, He looks at things in a totally different view. It will change your view completely how you think about life.

Get a minimum of 7.5 hrs sleep. I guess the 6hrs is what lawyers have to accept though
