It's actually free for students in 6 month licenses. You can renew after it cancels by resubmitting your student info to get another 6 months.

There are obvious negatives to subscription-based software as several have pointed out already in the comments, however in my case and I am sure many others, the ability to afford adobe products and other expensive software production tools just isn't possible without the subscription model. In the long run, I suppose I am paying more but just as many other large purchases the ability to pay as you go is how I can drive a newer car, live in an average home and so on. Another key benefit is in some cases is that I can suspend the software if I am not going to use it for a while and resubscribe when the need arises.

Already got Trapcode suite and Magic Bullet suite (got both in 2018). Propably smarter to save some money to just buy the VFX suite and own it forever? Or are the updates in complete THAT valuable?

Nice review of this products. Even though a lot of this plugins and stuff are really good stuff, it is still pretty damn expensive, so if you are not student you must pay full price, unfortunately for me it is quite expensive.

Red Giant actually has a student/teacher free for 6 month discount. I just sent them my letter of admission for proof of being a college student and they verified my email with the site and I now have the complete plug in pack for free.
