Black Hair Law Bans Hair Discrimination

“Carmen Davis went natural in 2004, motivated by her mother to do the “big chop”, a phrase commonly used to describe cutting off chemically straightened Black hair in favor of naturally textured kinks, coils or curls.
Standing in front of the recently defaced statue of the Confederate leader Robert E Lee in Richmond, Virginia, she recalled the backlash against her decision.
“My roommate in college stopped talking me,” she said, noting how even in college at the time, being natural was rare. “She told me it was embarrassing to be seen with me and that I’d regret it.”
Today, Davis is a natural hairstylist, helping women in the Richmond area transition from chemical processing. Her former roommate eventually became one of her many clients."

If any company discriminates against a persons natural hair we need to out them. This behavior is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE and the company should be hit in the wallet

That fact that there needs to be a law to prevent discrimination against people's natural hair is just sad.

As a European I am shocked the term “eurocentrism” is attached to such a disgusting way of discrimination!

The fact that this has to be a law is just stupid. It should never have been an issue! Ugh but I guess progress.

This act is necessary!
I remember my mom, having a short afro, and having to wear a 'weave/bun at work, because she worked in a mainly male dominated office (aircraft manufacturing), and they wanted her to look like a woman! They said her short 'fro made her look masculine!
She hated wearing it but wanted to keep her job, so she had no choice!.
Even myself working in advertising, I had to tie my dreads up and cover them because the company felt it was rebelious and/or gang related!
stupid!!!

The only reason for an employer to have any reason to even talk about people's hair is for health or safety. E.g. wearing hair nets in food preparation, or long hair not getting caught up in machinery. Other than that it is irrelevant. Of course you can do nothing about covert discrimination, that is, not getting hired in the first place. It is very hard to prove. But overt!? No way that can fly.

10 years ago I decided to grow my hair naturally. I distinctly remember being concerned about how my hair would be viewed at my job. There were negative incidents that were happening and had happened across the country.

This is just not an issue in my country.
At all.
Not even the army has restrictions, although military cuts are common.
The Dutch army used to be known as "the hippie army" for allowing all kinds of hair styles.

I am sure we all remember that poor kid ( not economically) that was forced by a ref or a tournament to lop off his dreds or be disqualified. How sadistic. Slightly off topic but there was a case where a young black swimmer was discriminated against simply because she was more voluptuous then the rest.

I didn't know it was an issue, but I see & understand it now. Learn something new every day. Thanks for the lesson.

I cannot fathom how this is even an issue In this age. How on earth can a person's hair be punishable?? I guess in the same way that skin colour can be, right? What an ugly world when we punish and bully people in adulthood, as in grade school. Dreadful. Shameful.
