A stock is a piece of ownership in a company. When you buy a stock, you're essentially buying a piece of ownership in that company.

You become one of the owners, or shareholders, of the company.

Example:
-- Company has 1,000 stocks outstanding
-- You purchase 50 stocks
-- Then you own 5% of the company (50 / 1000)
-- You're entitled to 5% of the company's assets & earnings

So the percentage of shares you own always represent the total percentage of the company you own? That means that once a company go public, all the company is sold to the public and the only way the previous owner can keep a part is by buying his own shares?

My question Lets say you invest in a company .... ( you get 10 shares of a 100 shares ).... do you get 10% of the profit of the company ?!?!?
technically you're 10% owner of the company... so you get 10% of profit ??
