Great video! I’m just starting my career in scijournalism and scicomm (like you said there are differences), there is a bit of fuzziness between the two.

I also do technical writing (i.e. requirements gathering for IT systems development). It’s challenging but really cool IMO.

I used to work in a newsroom but I moved away from daily reporting and multimedia journalism to working with a lot of academics, scientists and researchers and consultants. I was nervous at first but I’ve got to start somewhere. Thanks for sharing your insight !

I’m planning a way out of a mid-career gap, with my prior work being in public radio and documentary film as a writer/producer. I started on YouTube years ago to round out my video skills, and am now building on that with illustration, animation and motion graphics (trying to do BookTube/AuthorTube with more visual flair). But now, as I try to integrate all that came before into something new, I think “freelance multimedia creator” in public-facing scicomm is one potential destination for me, something in the vein of Kurzgesagt or TED-Ed explainer animation, though I’m still thinking about my personal branding and goals. All that to say… this video was very helpful in answering questions I had. Has the market shifted at all since you made this video (post-pandemic, evolution of social media, new opportunities, new challenges, etc.)?

Has teaching ever interested you? I think you would be so great! I am a history nerd, I’ve always been fascinated by science but it wasn’t the best science student so I really love hearing you talk about it. Once someone is in one of these science writer positions, are they pretty much secure in that position? What are some of the popular sections of science with a big audience of readers ( idk if I worded that right!🤔)
