Old timers constructed a sluice right into the river bed and left it there for me to clean out. Unfortunately now a days these are not legal, so I had to remove it.

I don't get how these work. It seems like leaving it there would mean it would just get covered in gravels eventually and make it pointless. With a regular sluice you are there to see what is going on and fix issues, but how does this avoid a big rock or tree branch washing in and you losing a ton of gold? Or even account for a flow rate being too high or too low? Seems overly destructive for not a lot of use in the end
