Aldi’s cashiers look pretty cozy sitting behind those chairs behind the register.

Every retail business should be doing this. Period.

They should sit. It's terrible to keep people on their feet for hours.

It is a requirement in Germany for seats to be provided to cashiers. Aldi is a German company and follows this requirement.

Good for them! It’s not surprising since Aldi is European based and some of their countries require cashiers to sit down while working. More American service industries should learn from them.

It also saves your back and feet. Kroger should do this.

All supermarkets in Europe do this, not just Aldi. It seems that in the US, shoppers expect the cashiers to be a servant class, who has to stand at attention for them.

Tell me you don’t live in the US without telling me you don't live in the US:
All checkout staff in every supermarket have seats and no-one thinks they are "taking a break" while sitting down.

I agree it is speedy service with an employee who is happy because they have a more ergonomic work environment. It also allows a person with a disability that prevents them from being on their feet for extended periods to actually find disability friendly employers. Well done ALDI. Others need. Too follow!

In Germany everyone sits behind the cash register, I thought that was normal.
It's much more relaxing than standing all the time.

In Ecuador I worked as a cashier in a supermarket and we had chairs. You could work standing up or sitting down and it is much more confortable for the employee and therefore you have a better attitude. It should be mandated for stores to allow employee to sit down also and more importantly for health reasons since being on your feet all day is the cause of varicose veins. Varicose veins are not only a cosmetic problem as some people may think they can actually cause thrombosis and other complications which are serious conditions that with time it could lead to a surgery or more complicated treatments.

Makes sense....if the cashier is comfortable while working, the better the productivity 👌

Walmart needs to listen and do this with their 2 “manned” cash registers.

Where do supermarket cashiers stand up. In the UK you only see it at the kiosks and self checkouts. All the main checkouts in all the supermarkets are seated posts.

That is nothing new to anyone who was outside of the USA. It is the norm in Europe. It was shocking to me when I saw cashiers standing here while doing their job. I found that rather cruel that they are standing for 8 hrs a day.

All markets should give checkers a stool or chair
So they don't ruin their legs😮

Good for Aldi. Wish more big companys did this. Alot less stress on a person's body

The real reason is the employees have to stock the store in the mornings then pull the rest of their shift at the register.
They would be too tired to stand.
Aldi's isn't some benevolent company.

Always served customers sitting down in the UK did for more than 10 years and our cashiers still do in the UK but I think it's the same in the majority of Europe just the US are too mean to allow it xx

Another thing to add is Cashiers at Food Discounters or Drugstores in Germany only sit if they have customers if no customer is around they have to get up and clean or restock the area near the check out...
