Which 8mm or Super 8 Film Scanner Is The Best? Which One To Buy? Very Important Information!

When looking for a 8mm or Super 8 film scanner there is not a huge choice of scanners. There are mainly two very similar products, but they are totally different regarding the flexibility of film reels and especially regarding the quality of videos they deliver. Watch and see!

Mine is slightly different (smaller model) it has three tabs instead of two. Two in the front and one in the middle. It works fine. I had trouble with a store-bought super8 tourist movie. All homemade movies are coming out fine. It seems the problem you pointed out has been corrected.

Thanks so much. You are absolutely correct. I bought the smaller version and after just a few copies the film began to skip and drag as it was being pulled through.

Some local libraries have these. You can use for free in library. Also have scanners for other things like negatives.

I just learned about these machnes today and ordered the wrong one (the small one, ) at Amazon, but I realized my error and went back and spent the extra $30 for the Big Boy. (the majority of my reels are 7".) When you're already in for $230, what's and extra $30 to go deluxe?

I have use the filmscanner, it is a very good machine.

Will this machine transfer a regular 8mm film with damaged sprocket holes? Even a film with no sprocket holes at all in some sections?

I really needed this. If I had found you before I ordered the wrong one it would have been good. Oh well can’t wait to get started. Thanks

I don’t know anything about films, but I recently bought a working double 8 movie camera and some new double 8 film for it. Would this be able to scan double 8 film? I assume I’d have to split the film first?

One user of the Wolverine in another forum claims it is good for maybe 30 3"reels before parts wear out and registration is gone because of cheap plastic parts. Can I ask how many reels or feet you have scanned?

SO, you recommend Wolverine in one video, but Eyesen in another video. I have also looked at the DigitNow brand... the specs on all three are all very similar, operation and reel size. Are they all made by the SAME company and then a different brand name slapped on them???

Tried both of those, they suck, registration is awful, they use crappy cameras and my scanner produces 4K 16bit dpx raw scans of super8, 8mm, 9.5mm and 16/s16 at 8-12fps with no overscan. But you can lease it for really cheap compared to the cost of getting pro scans from fotokem if you have a big library and you can learn how to use the machine correctly. There’s a lot you can do from the scanner side to fix things like color imbalances and exposure especially in faded film, and it takes some finesse.

What about the quality of the scanned files? Do the machines produce equivalent results (i.e. not so good because of high compression rate), or does one produce visibly superior results compared to the other machine?

hi! I'm close to buy a film scanner, also thanks to your video, but I still have a couple of doubts:
1) there's a version similar to the one in your video, but it's all black and it costs twice.... do you know the difference?
2) some reviews on your scanner say that the pivots don't spin, and film gets scretched.... is it true?
Thanks!!!

All of these devices generate poor-quality results. There is a large amount of video "noise" in the mp4 files and the edges of contrasty areas look very coarse. Many people are not fussy about getting good quality from their 8mm films, and that's why these products are still on the market.

I'm a little confused. I went to your link and the page shows all the scanners available. Which one is the one you advise to buy? I see two different prices for the same scanner with extended arm parts. The one sold by "Wolverine" is $399 and the one sold by "Essen" is $299. Is there a difference?

WHY didnt you show the difference instead of having the other machine running.? A big boo for this one.
