You get so much better views from the traditional lines than from Shinkansen. Same in Japan as in Europe. That's why I'd always prefer to use the traditional lines, and in Japan they still invest in them, as we can see here

I had the pleasure of visiting Takayama in the summer of 2018 and taking the same route by train. The train route was very beautiful and the city is really charming.
The meat is really exquisite.

My good lord what a country. This isn't a mere train ride, but instead the birth child of a train ride and a tour. The announcer talks about the location. I found the announcement from the high language club quite fascinating. The path they take is so beautiful that they can afford to make a tour message about it lmao. Here in America, our trains would say "If you look to the left, you will witness a store looting and shooting occurring simultaneously." 😂

I saw this train in Nagoya station on the platform beside the one's I'm taking (Shinano limited express for Nagano). I was really attracted to it that I was tempted to just get inside for a bit and have a look whilst waiting for my decent but old train.
