For me, there's no preference. The Lesney Matchbox 41A and 41B D-Type Jaguars both work. Usually when a model is upscaled such as the 5A to 5B London Bus or 13A to 14B Bedford Wreck Trucks the castings either gain or lose something. All that the 41B gains is scale. Both work perfectly proportionally and both are beautifully sculpted and detailed.
My pair are were both typically scratched from general play and each had lost most of their number 41 decals. I replaced these and repainted each in a gorgeous coat of Tamiya's Racing Green. There were countless variations on the two models but I think this combination works well as a pair. The 41B did come with wire wheels later on in production, as well as rarer red hubs, with the wire wheels working well in isolation. But paired, I think the grey plastic type and metal wheels of the 41A is the best match for this video.
The real D-Type was developed by Jaguar specifically to win Le Mans. Production started in 1954 and for a fuel filter issue would probably have won. They were more aerodynamic that the race winning Ferrari, clocking a top speed 12mph faster than the Ferrari down the Mulsanne straight. The D-Type returned to win in 1955, as well as 1956 and 1957 with the Écurie Écosse team.
